Elk River Railroad

Norman and Ann Lundin, Newnan, GA

The layout is beneath a 200 year old oak tree inside a driveway turnaround in front of our house. ERR has Colorado and Elk River narrow gauge, Shays, 2-6-0s, and 2-8-0s. Since we also like large power and Burlington Northern, there is everything from S-4’s to SD40-2, to SD70MAC’s. We run a custom built UP 2-6-6-2 Challenger and a Southern 2-8-2 Mikado with several custom Southern lettered cars in 1:29 scale. Several different passenger sets, a SanteFe Warbonnet Silverliner (F-3 A/B and 7 cars) and a B&O FA/FB/FA with streamlined and heavyweight cars, tour the layout. The two BN SD40-2’s pull an intermodal train with 20 cars without looking overly large for the layout. The nicest time to enjoy the layout is to walk into the middle, sit down on a bench and hear the several waterfalls, Phoenix sound systems in the trains, just as dusk descends and the landscape lights come on. The distant sound of a passing CSX freight blowing for the crossings in downtown Newnan adds the crowning touch.

Started in 1995, the railroad has two upper loops and one lower loop in an area about 65' x 35'. The maximum grade is 2%. The locomotives are battery powered and controlled using Airwire 900. Norm and Ann hosted the GGRS in October, 2006, and April, 2002.
